Expanding polyurethane foam is an effective tool for filling unsafe voids and closing hazardous openings, such as old well casings, undermined ground beneath a slab or culvert, and abandoned shaft openings, but it is one component of a safe closure, not the whole solution on its own. Ecologic installs the foam-fill portion of these jobs in coordination with whoever is responsible for the site and the closure plan: a landowner, an engineer, a municipality, or a provincial or federal reclamation program. We do not perform hazard assessments and we do not claim a foam plug alone makes a hazardous site permanently safe.

01 Scope

A fill material, applied to a plan someone else has approved

Manitoba has old wells, mine workings and undermined ground in places where a fall or collapse hazard exists. Sealing one of these safely is usually a small engineered project: a hazard assessment, a closure method, sometimes fencing or signage, and a fill material. Foam is often the right fill material, because it expands to reach irregular voids, sets quickly, and doesn't add the weight a full concrete pour would to unstable ground.

Ecologic's role in that project is the installation: getting the foam into the void, to the volume and location the plan calls for. We work from direction supplied by the landowner, a geotechnical engineer, a municipality, or the government body responsible for the site. We are not a substitute for that assessment, and we won't quote a hazard closure without one.

What we install

A higher free-rise, higher-expansion polyurethane foam suited to void fill, chosen for the specific job. This is a different product from the 2lb closed-cell foam used in wall and attic insulation; we'll confirm the right material for your closure once the scope is set.

Typical fill applications: old well casings, undermined ground beneath slabs and culverts, and voids identified as part of a shaft or adit closure plan.

How this kind of job actually runs

Comes before we're involved

Hazard identification. Someone, usually the landowner, a municipality, or a provincial reclamation program, identifies the void or opening as a hazard.

Closure plan. An engineer or the governing authority decides how the site should be closed: fill material, volume, and any surface work (fencing, signage, monitoring).

Where Ecologic does the work

Site access and injection or pour. We get the foam to the void and apply it to the volume and location specified in the plan.

Documentation. We record what was installed, where, and how much, for the file the responsible party keeps on the closure.

Can spray foam actually make an old mine shaft or well safe?

Foam fill is one component of a safe closure, not the whole plan. On its own, an expanding polyurethane plug can close off a fall hazard and displace standing water at the point of injection. It does not replace a proper hazard assessment, an engineering review of the surrounding ground, or the fencing, signage and monitoring a full reclamation plan usually calls for. We do the foam-fill portion in coordination with whoever holds responsibility for the site.

What kinds of voids and openings does this cover?

Abandoned well casings, old shaft openings, undermined sections beneath culverts or slabs, and similar voids where an engineered closure calls for a lightweight, fast-setting fill rather than poured concrete. Every job is scoped on site first.

Do you assess whether a site is hazardous?

No. We install the fill once a hazard has been identified and a closure approach has been decided, by the landowner, a geotechnical engineer, or the relevant government program. If you're not sure whether a void on your property needs professional attention, get that assessment first.

How is this different from spray foam insulation?

Different product, different purpose. Wall-spray insulation is a 2lb closed-cell foam engineered for thermal performance. Void-fill foam is a higher free-rise, higher-expansion polyurethane chosen for fill volume and set speed, not R-value.
