01 The problem
Steel doesn't insulate itself, and it condensates hard
A shipping container's corrugated steel skin is an excellent structure and a terrible thermal envelope. Left bare, or lined only with wood finish and no insulation layer, the inside of the roof and walls swings to outdoor temperature and condenses whenever warmer, more humid interior air touches it, the "container rain" problem that shows up as dripping from the ceiling or rust starting on the inside of the roof.
Spray foam solves the structural part of this problem directly: applied against the bare steel, it adheres to the corrugations, keeps the interior steel surface above the dew point, and closes the whole shell in a continuous air-and-vapour layer without needing a full stud wall built first.
Where it goes
Applied directly to the container's interior steel skin (walls, roof and often the floor understructure), before or as interior finish framing goes in. Closed-cell is the usual choice, for the same moisture-tolerance reasons it's used against concrete and steel elsewhere.

Framing up, cavities still open. We can spray between studs against the container wall before drywall, panelling or plywood closes it in.

Fully finished interiors. Some finish typically needs to come off first to reach the steel; we'll scope what that involves before quoting.
Multi-container builds. Connected or stacked container structures usually need a short site visit to plan sequencing around openings and cut-throughs.

Why does an insulated container need spray foam specifically?
A steel container has no cavity to put batt insulation into unless you build interior framing first, and batts don't stop container rain, the condensation that forms on bare steel. Foam adheres directly to the corrugated steel, closing off the metal from interior humidity, and fills the corrugations without needing a stud wall first.
What is "container rain" and does foam stop it?
Condensation that forms on the underside of a container's steel roof and drips down, common wherever a heated interior meets uninsulated steel exposed to Manitoba's temperature swings. Foam stops it by keeping the interior steel surface above the dew point.
Can you foam a container with an interior already built?
Easier before interior finishing goes in. If framing is up but cavities are open, we can often still spray between studs against the container wall. Fully finished interiors need some finish removed first.
