Most older cottage docks float on plain expanded-polystyrene billets, wrapped in nothing or in thin plastic sleeves that don't last. UV exposure, ice shove in spring, and gulls and other animals pecking at exposed foam all break the surface down over a few seasons. Once that starts, the billet sheds small polystyrene beads directly into the lake every time the dock moves, which doesn't go away; it accumulates on shorelines and in sediment.

Does encapsulated foam lose flotation over time?

Can you retrofit an existing dock?
